Vol. 1 Issue 7 THE RIVERVIEW July 2001 THE RIVERVIEW: A PUBLICATION OF STC In this issue:
Mill Creek Marina The most beautiful part about Mill Creek is about to be destroyed. A developer has proposed a development that will include 185 boat slips and 150 town homes ranging from $250,00 $450,000. A few years ago I camped up in this creek where the homes will be built. I recognized it as a great place for a park. Plenty of land in a secluded area with a deep water inlet from the Cumberland River. The developer Jim Varallo says that the plan is just in the planning stage. He said
that he was talking to the Corps of Engineers about digging up 800,000 cubic yards of dirt
that will ultimately create a 32 foot deep hole. This will eventually be flooded with 4.5
million gallons of water to make the marina part of the compound. Tom Beasley who owns the property said "Its a beautiful piece of property , and I wanted to see something good there." Unfortunately the only good this will do is put money in his pocket. Another quote taken from a local paper is Beasley saying " I dont know anyone who wouldnt like to have a boat." Are they giving them away?

Duck River Mussel Back in the old days people use to go out to the rivers and collect mussels. Some went out to find pearls, which were rare and valuable. Some went out to collect them to eat. Now if you ever ate a river mussel you know that they are tough. Mussels are meant to be juiced. The Indians used mussels in their soups. Evidence of this are the great shell mounds found along the rivers and coastal areas. During the Civil War food was not always plentiful, especially for the Confederate troops. A soldier named Sam Watkins of Company H of the 1st Infantry Tennessee wrote this in 1861. "When we got to camp we cracked the shells and took out the mussels. We tried frying them, but the longer they fried the tougher they got. They were a little too large to swallow whole. Then we stewed them, and after a while we boiled them, and then we baked them, but ever flank movement we would make on those mussels the more invulnerable they would get." We didnt win that war either!
CAMP
Lets go camping! The reason to camp goes back thousands of years. We have been camping a whole lot longer than weve been in the house watching television. So that means we are more comfortable and stress free out in the woods or along a river bank. There are many places to camp and many more ways to do it. There is back packing. The main reason to do this is to get to a remote area that you cant drive to. This means everything must be light and only carry what you need to have the best experience. Truck camping is where you haul almost everything. This is for people that love their stuff or for people that have multiple agendas. There is camping were your vehicle is the camper. This is like driving your house around. Some people bring their camping equipment when they travel. Campgrounds offer tent camping for about $10-15 a night. Then theres river camping. This is where you travel heavy or light, travel great distances and are far removed from roads, campgrounds, and crowds. Water and food is plentiful and you can always take a bath and brush your teeth without going through your drinking water. This is preferred.
Arctic National Refuge Why would anybody ever designate a place of refuge, then allow anything other to take place there. Maybe some idiot thought that it would be a refuge to the oil business. That it would refuge them in the black. I dont agree with the way the government designates parks, forest, preserves, wildlife management areas, historical sites, and refuges. The same mentality with these "treaties" are the same ones that were broken with the Indians. The oil companies say that with new technology their footprint on an area is small. I dont believe that! You cant even get off road with your car and not cause any damage. If you want more info on the arctic refuge go to www.arctic.fws.gov

Metro Center Will Cut Trees, Pour Rip Rap The word has been out for a few years that Metro Center was going to pour rip rap along the muddy banks of the Cumberland River.
Metro Center has plans to build a walking trail and flood walls that blend in with the landscape. Hopefully this will enhance the area and get people closer to the river.
No! Cheatham Co. Power Plant Protesters showed up in big numbers to voice their disapproval to a proposed natural gas power plant that a company called Dominion wants to build here. The plant was to be built near Brush Creek. This is part of President Bushs plan to build a power plant a month for the next 20 years. My friend Tony Dunn lives on Brush Creek. He has criticized environmentalist, particularly STC in the past. I guess he has seen the light. People get involved when it starts to invade their world. I applaud Tony for going to the protest and bringing his camel. I think I saw a sign on the camel that said "I use to be a cow" referring to what the power plant could cause to happen with the environment. I know what power plants cause. Ive worked in power plants for 20+ years. Its not only the emissions that cause damage to the air but many other things. Oil handling from the machinery ends up on the ground. There are gasses that get released in the air. Chemicals that are used to treat water in cooling towers are dangerous to human and wild life. There is a lot of trash that is generated from maintenance, personal and contractual sources. On top of that power plants use up a lot of resources. Including what they burn to generate electricity. In this case natural gas. The protesters did come up with a plan during this issue. It is to vote the council people out of office that wanted to approve the plant. The one thing that we do have, is the right to vote! Hopefully we will use this to keep people out of office that think with their pockets.
