R/V EASTERN SURVEYOR HISTORY YP-675

"PART BOAT PART SHIP" IS HOW THE NAVY AFFECTIONATELY REFERRED TO THE YP (YARD PATROL) CLASS TRAINING VESSELS. THESE YP'S AFFORDED MIDSHIPMEN THE OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN NAVIGATION AND SHIP HANDLING. CONSEQUENTLY THESE 80' BOATS WERE BUILT TO SHIP STANDARDS. AND WERE DESIGNATED TO OPERATE LIKE A SHIP. THEY ARE EVEN OUTFITTED WITH AN ENGINEER'S CONTROL ROOM. EASTERN SURVEYOR IS THE LAST OF THE 80' 654 CLASS... A CLASS WHICH WAS CONSIDERED BY MANY TO BE THE BEST BUILT OF THE WOODEN NAVY VESSELS.

THE R/V EASTERN SURVEYOR WAS BUILT IN STURGEON BAY WI. IN 1979 BY PETERSON BUILDERS INC. FOR A COST OF $2.4 MILLION DOLLARS. TODAY THIS SAME VESSEL WOULD COST BETWEEN $3-5 MILLION DOLLARS TO BUILD AND STILL WOULD NOT BE TO THE STANDARDS AS THEY WERE BUILT IN THE 70'S.

THE 654 CLASS CONSIDERED BY MANY TO BE THE TRUE ESSENCE OF A TRAINING YP AND AMONG THE BEST BUILT WOOD NAVAL VESSELS. AT 80' AND 90 TONS THESE WERE THE LARGEST AND MOST THOROUGHLY EQUIPPED YP'S TO DATE.

ONE ACKNOWLEDGED EXPERT IN THE FIELD OF WOOD VESSEL CONSTRUCTION AND SURVEYING DESCRIBED THESE CRAFTS AS "THE EPITOME OF WOODEN BOAT CONSTRUCTION." TWENTY-TWO OF THE 654'S WERE BUILT, HULL NUMBERS 654-675, AND THEY SERVED THE NEEDS OF THE NAVY AND MIDSHIPMEN FROM THE MID 1950'S THROUGH THE EARLY 80'S.
